Making Butterfly Gardens

Updated: Jul 16, 2021

Our Young Explorers have been observing all sorts of new bugs and insects showing up in our outdoor space since the weather started getting warmer. Roly Polies have been a favorite find up until recently when our lilac bush and tree started to bloom. the children noticed a few little white butterflies fluttering all around our tree. We watched the butterflies as they landed on the flowers, the children were curious as to what they were doing so naturally I pulled all of our butterfly books out of storage. The children had a blast looking through information books as well as story books. We discovered that the little white butterflies are called cabbage white butterflies, they are the first butterflies to appear at the beginning of the season.

We then read beautifully written and illustrated book about a girl who learns how to attract butterflies to her neighborhood park. Our Young Explorers then decided to make their own planters filled with plants that butterflies are attracted to.
